60 Second Summary – Tesco Bank Travel Insurance Review 2024
Tesco Bank offers basic low-cost travel insurance policies, which can work well for some parents and families. You can choose between a single trip policy or annual travel cover if you are thinking of booking a few holidays within the next year.
- Tesco travel insurance will cover a maximum of two adults and four children up to age 17 within one family travel insurance policy.
- Tesco travel insurance offers decent value for money, with prices starting at less than £30 and all policies include unlimited medical emergency cover.
- Tesco might not cover you if someone in your family has ongoing health issues, even though they say they cover “some” pre-existing conditions.
- Extra benefits like winter sports, cruise, and gadget cover can be added – but this will cost you more.
- Tesco travel insurance offers 24/7 online health support through the HealthHero app, so you can get quick advice if you or your kids get sick while abroad.
- Tesco travel insurance policies are now provided by Rock Insurance (underwritten by AWP P&C S.A.), with gadget cover provided by AmTrust Europe.
- There are loads of travel insurance companies in the UK, so there are other options if Tesco Insurance doesn’t seem like the right choice for you.
What is Tesco travel insurance?
Tesco Insurance offers a few different options for travel insurance policies, so you can choose the one that works best for your family. There are 3 main options for Tesco travel insurance which are:
- Tesco single trip travel insurance – Protects you before and during one holiday and you need to tell Tesco when you are travelling and where you are travelling to when you apply.
- Tesco annual travel insurance – Protects you for multiple trips over the next 12 months if they are all within the same area (e.g. Europe). This is usually more convenient and can be cheaper than buying 2 or more policies.
- Tesco backpacker insurance – These policies are useful for longer one-off trips if you wanted to take your family travelling to more than one country. You would be covered for up to 18 months but can’t buy this type of cover if you are older than 50 years old.
*It’s always best to check whether you are covered for all of the destinations that you will visit when on holiday. For example, some European travel insurance policies exclude specific countries.
Key benefits of Tesco travel insurance for families:
- Unlimited cover for medical emergencies and repatriation.
- Tesco Clubcard members can claim 10% off travel insurance.
- 3 levels of cover to choose from (Economy, Standard, or Premier).
- Can add extra benefits so your family has a higher level of protection.
- 24/7 medical emergency helpline and online health support through the HealthHero app.
Main rules for Tesco travel insurance:
- The main policyholder must be at least 18 years old.
- Your trip can’t start or end outside of the UK.
- You can’t buy a policy if you are already on holiday.
- You can’t be over 80 years old for standard cover.
- You can’t be over 50 years old if you are buying backpackers insurance.
Who underwrites Tesco travel insurance?
Tesco travel insurance was underwritten by Inter Partner Assistance S.A. (part of AXA) up until September 2024. Tesco travel insurance is now arranged and administered by Rock Insurance Services Limited and underwritten by AWP P&C S.A.
Tesco’s ‘Gadget Cover’ additional benefit is underwritten by a separate company, AmTrust Europe Limited. Most banks and insurance companies use different underwriters for gadget cover, so this isn’t anything to be worried about.

Is Tesco travel insurance any good for families?
Tesco travel insurance can be a great choice for families, covering two parents and up to four kids (17 years old or younger). If you’ve got a bigger family, you might want to check out other insurers that can cover more than four children on one policy.
Here are the main pros and cons to help you work out if Tesco travel insurance is a good fit for your next family holiday.
Pros and Cons of Tesco travel insurance
Pros
- All travel insurance policies have been rated either 4 Stars or 5 Stars by Defaqto, which suggests that they offer a decent level of cover and extra benefits.
- Cheap and cheerful policies that offer a basic level of travel insurance coverage – with exclusive discount for Tesco Clubcard members.
- All policies include unlimited cover for medical emergencies and repatriation (if needed).
Cons
- Won’t cover all medical conditions and might offer more expensive quotes for minor medical conditions.
- Doesn’t cover travellers past age 80 – not ideal if you wanted to cover grandparents as well.
- Won’t pay out in every possible situation (see the ‘What doesn’t Tesco travel insurance cover?’ section below).
Does Tesco travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
When you apply for Tesco travel insurance, you will be asked if anyone on the policy:
- Has a terminal illness.
- Has any unexplained symptoms.
- Has any conditions where they have received medication, advice, treatment, or tests within the last 12 months.
Tesco might not be the best fit for your family if you, your partner, or your kids have any health conditions. While they say they cover “some pre-existing conditions,” there’s a chance they won’t be able to offer cover at all depending on your medical history.
You should inform Tesco if you develop new symptoms or conditions before you travel. If you don’t, this could also cause Tesco to refuse to pay out on any medical claims even if they are unrelated.

Are there any deals for Tesco family travel insurance?
Parents can currently claim 10% off travel insurance for Tesco Clubcard members* to help you save money on your new travel insurance policy. All you need to do is enter your Clubcard number when you fill in your application, and Tesco should apply the discount for you.
Tesco Clubcard holders can also benefit from a range of other travel deals and discounts too. Families can claim exclusive Virgin Atlantic Flying Club benefits using their Tesco Clubcard points (see our Deals & Discounts section for the latest travel deals).
Tesco also increases your level of cover for lost or damaged cash by 100% if you buy your travel money through Tesco Bank online or in-store.
If you are a Tesco Clubcard member, Tesco can automatically check your records when you apply for travel insurance to find basic information (e.g. name and address).
Note: *Don’t be caught out by assuming that the 10% discount applies in every scenario. You can’t use the 10% discount to take money off any additional travel insurance benefits like winter sports cover or cruise cover.

How do I make a Tesco travel insurance claim?
There’s nothing worse than the stress of having to claim on your travel insurance, whether you are still away or you’ve just gotten home. Tesco has tried to keep things simple, by providing full details about how to claim on their website and within their policy documents.
If you need to claim, Tesco’s team might ask for a copy of the following documents:
- The invoice from when you originally booked your holiday/flights.
- Invoices or receipts for any expenses caused by an interruption to your holiday.
- Any communications from a travel provider confirming flight delays, cancellations etc.
Once you have submitted a claim, you will be given a claims reference number and Tesco’s team will take it from there. They should be in touch to update you about your claim’s progress, but it doesn’t hurt to contact them if it’s taking a while for you to hear back.
Families with newer policies will struggle to find the right claims information online. Tesco recently switched their travel insurance partner to Rock Insurance and the online claims information only applies to policies bought before 4th September 2024.
For busy parents, the quickest way to find the right contact details is to check the Tesco Travel Insurance “Contact Us” page. Our MPO experts have also listed the latest Tesco contact details above.
TOP TIP: Always take your travel insurance policy documents with you when you go on holiday, so you can easily check if you’re covered if you think you have a valid claim.
